The newly reconstructed building of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church located in the famous “Mehamud Music” area in Piassa, which was demolished and rebuilt as part of the Corridor Development Project, was inaugurated today. The project was financed by the Addis Ababa City Administration.
The inauguration was led by His Holiness Abune Mathias I, Patriarch of Ethiopia, Archbishop of Axum, and Ichege of the See of St. Teklehaimanot.
During his speech, His Holiness began by saying: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s,” and expressed gratitude by stating, “We thank you for the honor and respect you have shown to what belongs to God.” He noted that the work done is exemplary and reflects putting words into action. He also presented certificates of recognition and appreciation to the mayor and the city administration on behalf of the Church.
His Grace Abune Sawiros also gave remarks, stating: “Development is the result of good intentions,” and praised the effort to construct such a modern and multifunctional building. He extended his gratitude to Mayor Adanech Abiebie and all stakeholders who contributed to the project.
Mayor Adanech Abiebie, in her message, highlighted that the building is “a modern structure that blends with its surroundings and serves as a lasting heritage for the next generation.” She emphasized the Church’s contribution to the Corridor Development Project across various parts of the city and offered her appreciation.
Members of the city administration who were professionally involved in the construction were also awarded certificates of recognition.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including:
- His Grace Abune Sawiros, Chief Administrator of the Patriarchate and Archbishop of Southwest Shewa and Sheger City Diocese,
- His Grace Abune Dioskoros, General Secretary of the Holy Synod and Archbishop of Southeast Tigray and Raya Diocese,
- Other high-ranking church leaders,
- Senior city government officials, and
- Invited guests.
