tmceth His Holiness Pope Tawadros II Discusses Ways to Support Ecclesial Unity in India with a Delegation from the Malankara Church


⭕️ His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, received this morning at the Papal Residence in Cairo a delegation from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The delegation included His Eminence Metropolitan Yuhanon Mar Demetrios, Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese, and His Eminence Metropolitan Abraham Mar Stephanos, Metropolitan of the Dioceses of the United Kingdom, Europe, and Africa.

⭕️ The meeting took place within the context of ecclesiastical consultation regarding the current situation in the Malankara Church. The two metropolitans conveyed the greetings of His Holiness Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of Malankara, to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and delivered an official letter containing the Catholicos’s response to the joint letter previously sent by Pope Tawadros and His Holiness Catholicos Aram I (Catholicos of the Armenian Orthodox Church of the Great House of Cilicia) on 25 May, regarding the support of dialogue and unity within the Malankara Church.

⭕️ During the meeting, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II emphasized the importance of prioritizing the higher interests of the Church and acting in the spirit of love to preserve the unity of the Malankara Church. He expressed his appreciation for the leadership of the Indian Church and looked forward to a forthcoming visit by the Catholicos to Cairo to strengthen fraternal dialogue.

⭕️ His Holiness also stressed that the Coptic Orthodox Church follows with prayers and love the developments within the Malankara Church, affirming that safeguarding its internal unity is a spiritual and ecumenical necessity that serves the good of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

🔚 This meeting reflects the pivotal role that the Coptic Orthodox Church, under the leadership of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, plays in preserving the unity of the Oriental Orthodox family. Through its initiatives supporting dialogue and reconciliation, the Church continues to work toward fostering a spirit of partnership and love among sister Churches, thus strengthening the common witness to the true faith in a world facing growing ecclesial and humanitarian challenges.
